| Gorton monastry was an amazing building to see, gothic style with fabulous interior designs, the intricacy of the mouldings is amazing and although some parts of it have crumbled its truly a magnificent work of architecture. Hanging near thefront of the church is an immense cross with the figure of jesus, bleieved to have been stoled it turned upat an auction house and was returned to the monsastry.
The monastry of St Francis designed by Edward Pugin was completed in 1867. Of Catholic worship the monastry was part of the community for over 100 years. In the 1970's the monastry was run down as local residents began moving away to newer housing developments. During the 1980s a fund was held to try and help repair the church but eventually the brothers had to leave, by 1989 the monastry was no longer in use, the buildings were sold off and the monastry was vandalised. In 1996 the monastry was taken over by The Monastry of St Francis & Gorton Trust, the yhave been working to restore the monastry buildings. for pics before and after the work please use the link to level two , Snappels site info on history courtesy of snappel |
